History

The Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) is an American progressive think tank based in Washington, D.C. It has been directed by John Cavanagh since 1998. The organization focuses on U.S. foreign policy, domestic policy, human rights, international economics, and national security. According to their Mission Statement “IPS is a progressive organization dedicated to building a more equitable, ecologically sustainable, and peaceful society. In partnership with dynamic social movements, we turn transformative policy ideas into action.”

Funded by / Ownership

The Institute for Policy Studies is a 501(c)(3) organization. Donations generate revenue, but they do not list their top donors on the website.

Analysis / Bias

An analysis from The Heritage Foundation described IPS as, “an avowedly radical organization.” In review, the Institute for Policy Studies publishes articles that favor the left or is negative toward the right. They utilize emotionally loaded words in headlines and articles while using mostly left-leaning sources for information. The Institute for Policy Studies is usually factual in reporting, but they do tend to spin some information that can be misleading. In general, most articles reference facts and strongly lean left editorially, but the lack of transparency renders them Mostly Factual at best.
